[NI0512] Eliab Hickman served in E Company, 92nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. In a book about Noble County History (Wood Co. Library), it stated he was a POW, and was paroled and exchanged at Columbus, OH.
I have some confusion about his date of birth, and death. I have not been able to locate a Birth Record for him. His original gravestone states he was born July 4th, 1834. The 1900 Wirt County Census lists his age at 67, and date of birth as July 1832. His Civil War marker on his grave lists his birth as 1836.
His date of death on his original gravestone is listed as 1905, his date of death on his Civil War marker is listed as 1906. I checked Wirt County Records for his death Certificate and could not find it, but I was only searching 1905.
I have not personally seen the Gravestones mentioned above. While at the Wirt County Courthouse, I inquired as to how I could locate where Eliab was buried. I was given the name of someone who was researching Wirt County Cemeteries for a book. It was in phone conversations I obtained the information on the gravestones.
The cemetery is the Mt. Solon Cemetery on Blue Goose/Sonoma Rd. Traveling from Elizabeth to Reedy on Rte. 14. Blue Goose Rd. turns left near the Roane County line. Somewhere along that road is an old one-room schoolhouse on the left side. Across from it is the Cemetery. I was told the Civil War marker was relatively new. The lady I talked to estimated that it had been placed on the grave within the last 10 years. I expect the dates on it are based on Pension and enlistment records that the Army has, since the Veteran's Administration places the markers once they verify that indeed the person was in the military. It is very likely that the dates 1836-1906 are the most accurate.

This certificate of marriage was included in Rachel's application for
widowed mother's pension on the Civil War services of her son, Elijah.
Because of Monroe County court house fires in late 1800s, these records are
now lost.

! Death and burial information provided by Mrs. Martha Beckett of Apple
Creek, Ohio in a 12 June 1996 letter was an obituary and remembrance from
an unnamed and undated newspaper clipping, which read:
In Memory of Mrs. Rachael Beckett - Death is a sad pronunciation when it
enters our home and takes from our midst a near and dear one, yet it its
but a transition, a change from this state of existence to that of another,
and death is the portal which has in this instance claimed for its victim
Mrs. Rachael Beckett, whose maiden name was Fowler. Deceased was born in
Bridgeport, Belmont County, February 1, 1812, and died August 22, 1908 at
her home near Benwood, Ohio, being aged at death 96 years, six months and
21 days. She came to Monroe County when four years of age, where she has
since resided until death, being a resident of Monroe county for 92 years.
In 1839, she was united in marriage with John Beckett, now deceased. They
were the parents of four children, two boys and two girls. The older son,
Elijah, was a soldier in the rebellion, 25th O. V. I., who was wounded in a
battle in the Allegheny mountains and died from the effects of the wound.
One son, W. F. survives her. She was a member of the Church of Christ at
West Union over forty years. Interment was made in the West Union cemetery.

[NI2676] Served in Civil War. Enlisted June 15, 1861 in New Matinsville, WV, as a Private in Co. A. 11th WV Volunteer Infantry. In Oct. 1861, he was hospitalized in Wheeling, WV with lung trouble. He was discharged on Nov. 2, 1861 he was honorably discharged for disability. When able he re-enlisted Mar 4, 1865 at New Martinsville, WV in Co. A, 3rd WV Volunteer Cavalry.
